The Shire was a place of peace, few others knew of the Hobbit's existence let alone where they called home. A place that war had never touched since they dwelt there. Though unaware to the Hobbit's themselves they were protected by the Dúnedain who kept watch over their borders and stopped almost every attempt of anyone to invade. As the years progressed for the Shire there was once such invasion the Dúnedain couldn't stop. An amas of Orc's and Wargs lead by Glorfimbul attacked, the Hobbits despite being unaccustomed to war still rose up against the invaders. As the Third Age progressed further Gondor found itself under siege and in danger as its domains were attacked and laid siege to by the Khandish armies. Cirion the current Steward of Gondor called his forces together to push out and stop the Khandish threat but their numbers were too few. Knowing this Cirion sent requests of aid to anyone who would receive them. As the Khandish forces broke into Gondor's western provinces, a stand was made at the crossing while the only ally Gondor had that could arrive in time rode at full speed to assist, lead by their own King Eorl. Many years had passed since the corruption of the Greenwood following Sauron's unknown retreat to the east. Dol Guldur fell into ruin and the old pathways within the woods became accessible and usable again. Word had finally reached Gandalf of the corruption of the Greenwood, and the subsequent spread and attacks from Orc's and other nearby creatures. Fearing it could be the return of Sauron he always expected he prepares to venture there and in doing so found a fortress built within Mirkwood. Venturing in Gandalf had to deal with the protectors of the fortress and discover if Sauron was indeed hidden there.
